A cocktail ring is a large jeweled ring worn at cocktail parties or special occasions. The cocktail ring was exceedingly popular in America during the 1920’s, or the prohibition period, for being a symbol of status. It was worn not only for style, but to signify the wearer was drinking illegally. The women at these illegal parties were always adorned with the best attire and that always included their cocktail ring. The cocktail ring developed the reputation as a “status symbol” during this time.

Since 1920 the cocktail ring has grown increasingly popular. Not only do women wear these rings to parties, but to dress up for any occasion. The large precious or semi-precious stone may be any shape or color; therefore can be matched to any outfit. Most commonly the ring is worn during special events, such as award shows, theater productions, high school proms, and even weddings. However, such rings have recently become fashionable with an everyday wardrobe as well. Of course, not all cocktail rings are made of diamonds, the use of inexpensive gems in their stead has made this trend possible.

You may buy a cocktail ring suitable for any occasion at the nearest costume jewelry store. Most cocktail rings are semi inexpensive and are easy to coordinate with your attire. Of course these cheaper versions are more likely to be pointed out as a fake, but can do little harm to your pocket book if misplaced or stolen. There are more expensive replicas, but they can end up costing up to five hundred dollars. These rings are made with real gold instead of gold filler material. The rings worn by celebrities are real cocktail rings purchased at high end retailers and can cost up to one hundred thousand dollars. Smaller diamonds or other gem stones may surround the larger stone to increase desirability and value of these rings.

When purchasing a cocktail ring, or a replica, the things to look for are color of stone and of course the size. The colors most popular these days are garnet, topaz, amethyst, or emerald. They can be any size, but the bigger the better. The ring is meant to catch the eye and attention of whoever sees it. Most women prefer their rings to be three to five carats. However, the larger the stone, the easier it will be to spot possible flaws. You may also find these fascinating rings at estate sales, or auctions around your town. They may be less expensive and more authentic than those found in a retail store. Most sellers will allow an appraiser to look at the ring before the purchase and may have one on duty during the sale. You should always have the ring inspected for quality if you question the authenticity.

Most women wear their cocktail ring on any finger they choose, however it is not typically worn on the left ring finger. Wearing the cocktail ring on this finger could give the message they are married or engaged. The cocktail ring is most often worn on the right hand index finger. Many celebrities we see in the media wear their cocktail rings this way, and have catapulted this trend into what it is today.
